for drop shotting on lake erie, there is no better rod than the He76ms. the extra length is important to drive that little hook into the smallmouths mouth without pulling the lure away.

I use the he70ms, but I can see the benefits in the he76ms. Either would work fine.

I would say the rod you already have is the best for drop shotting. It is 6'9'' so you can set the hook with plenty of leverage, and it also works great for split shot and light shaky heads.
I also have a LTA 7' M (casting) paired with a Daiwa Sol and 10-lb fluoro, it excels in shaky heads, topwaters and small crankbaits but for drop shotting I like the Mg Drop Shot Special much better, don't know about the LTAs in spinning versions but I would stick to the Mg that you already have, if you want more sensibility I would experiment with 8 or 10-lb fluoro (P-Line 100% fluoro works great with that setup)...
On the other hand, the Heliums will always be better than the MGs... in the particular case of the drop shot special I really found it extremely good for its intended use but the LTA would NEVER hurt...

The best drop shot rod made today, would have to be the Kistler He269S this is the ultimate in sensitivity and lightness. I have used this rod on many occasion to cash a check, and would never leave without this rod in my boat. This rod alone would be a great asset to your rod quiver. But of course that is not the only Drop Shot Rod I use. Being from SoCal, I use a drop shot rod almost on a daily basis.

The other Kistler's I use are the LTA's and Argon series of rods, in particular the Argon AFF611S, this rod is a awsome. I used it at the Columbia River FLW this past June and it slayed those Smallies, a great Drop Shot rod if you want a little more back bone. This rod also served me very well throwing tubes. In the LTA's I like the He70MHS this rod is another fantastic rod if you want more back bone and a little more length, if your doing a lot of long distance drop shotting. Well those are my choices for ultimate drop shot rods. Any of these will help your drop shotting, and put many, many fish in the boat, if you need any more help "drop shot" me a post. Good Luck and Tight Lines

thx rob, what i found was i was fishing in 40ft or more and the rod i have made it a long fight to land the fish, need more rod to wear them brown diggers out !! the smallmouth here get up to 7lbs with 4/5 common of course when your on em. i fish the stren series and bass opens and prefer to power fish but to get a check or win you need a quick limit of smallies then go green, on champlain anyway. i use braid with 6lb 100 % flourocarbon. so being 40ft + with 5-7lb fish what would you use ??? thx. alot, john p.s. have you tried slammers yet for drop shotting ??? made in canada and are a smallmouth killer..... better then robo worms.

AFF611S if you like the Argon rods. Next in the LTA rods is the He70MS.

Looking at what your doing, I would be going with the Argon AFF611S, this rod will not let you down. Great for bringing in big smallies, that is exactly why I got it last year for the Columbia River FLW Event. This rod was easily able to pull big smallies off of industrial river snags but it still had great sensitivity and feel, and enough tip to protect your light line. I have not tried the slammers, be it that I live only 10 miles from where they make Robo Worms, we SoCal Bassers are very partial to them. That does'nt mean I won't try them though. Well hope that helps, Tight Lines

thank you for your input and time rob. i will go ahead and get the argon my friend. dont get me wrong, im from the north and 90 % of my drop shot baits are robo worms, they are awesome and warmouth is the best color i find. the slammers are alot like the gobys we have in our waters and the action is pretty sick. robo worms on one stick and slammers on the other, hell of a one two punch !! best of luck this year, john howell [/quote]
