Just wanted to make a statement. I bought my first Kistler rod about 3 years ago (Helium LTA He70MHC) and I must say, one of the best investments I ...

Why in the world do you need 40lb braid when you are using a Med-Hvy action rod? If the rod breaks, you will have voided your warranty. BUT, I do know guys who do this and they know how to play the fish and use their rods correctly without any problem.

That being said, do what you feel is best for your fishing situation. I personally would step down a little from 40lb to 20lb braid and you should achieve the same or better results.

Good Luck,

Trey

Tyler,

Don't forget, if you are using line rated above the recommended specifications on the rod, the real key is to set the drag on your reel accordingly. In other words, if you're using 40lb test on a rod rated for 20lbs and you lock your drag down all the way to stop a fish, you run the real risk of breaking the rod. On the other hand, if you back off the drag and allow the fish to run and tire itself out before you bring it in, you'll have a more thrilling catching experience and protect your gear from damage.

I don't use braid lighter than 30lb. on any of my baitcasters. The reason isn't because of the rod I'm using, it's because the lighter braids tend to dig into the underlying line when put under pressure. The trick is to set your drag accordingly. My heaviest drag setting starts slipping at 10lbs. of pressure and that's on my musky rod.

i would personally go down to 20 pound braid because you will still get the same amount of line strength and if u are fresh water fishing there is not much stuff that i know of that can break 20 pound line......but i guess that just depends on where u fish. However, i would go to 20 pound line because the line diameter is smaller so harder for the fish to see but whatever you choose good luck!
