Tyler,
I've never heard the term "soft action" tip... what I have heard is fast, extra-fast, slow, medium, and regular.
What these terms refer to, in general, is how far the tip of the rod bends before you reach its backbone. For example, an extra-fast rod allows you to tap into the rods backbone the soonest for faster hooksetting performance. This is a great action for fishing vertical presentation baits such as plastics and jigs.
On the flip side, a "regular" action rod sets up the slowest and often bends to about a third or half (when measured from tip to base) of the length of the rod before reaching the backbone. This action is favored by most for crankbaits to allow a fish the opportunity to grab the bait in its mouth and move it around before you set the hook.
That's a brief explanation.. hope it helps

Cal is exactly correct. Couldn't have said it better myself. Everyone has thrown these words around so much that many fishermen are confused. Some use the words Medium action rod for the description of their rod choice. Well, what they mean is Medium power and moderate action most likely. Anyway, don't let it get you confused.
