11/11/08 10:35am 7" med crankin rod for jerkbaits?
Does anybody have a opinion of how this rod will handle throwing bigger jerkbaits for Smallmouths? I'm talkin lucky craft 100's, and 110 Flash minnows. Does it have a soft enough tip for the little pointer 78's ?? Thanks.

I usually throw all my jerk-baits on a medium LTA spinning rod, but I would thank it would be fine for throwing those jerk-baits.

The 7' Graphite Plus Crankbait rod is awesome and I throw it frequently using 100-200 series bandits. I would strongly recommend the Magnesium TS series 6'8" Top water/Jerk bait special rod. I personally own both rods and like the Mag TS rod better for jerk baits. The tip is not as light and the little bit shorter rod (and especially the little bit shorter handle) allow me to work the bait better. Plus, this rod is lighter and priced very well for the quality and performance you get. Hope this helps.

I agree with Iowabassguy. The Magnesium Top water/Jerk bait rod is the perfect rod for the jerk baits you are throwing.

Thanks guy's. I really want a rod with a short, fast tip, but with a very powerfull butt section to handle our large spring Smallmouths up here on Green Bay . I'm making long, two handed casts with Flash Minnows and Big Pointers. I would rather use Baitcasting gear, than spinning. Thanks for all the advice and I'll take it all into consideration !! Scooter

I also own the Magnesium 7' medium graph/comp crankin' rod and the 6'8" topwater jerkbait rod and the 6'8" is MUCH better for throwing jerkbaits. It is the perfect balance of light tip/solid backbone. It is not nearly as soft a tip as the cranking stick. In my opinion the 7' crankin' rod is much too soft for effectively throwing jerkbaits. It is a true cranking rod and that's all I use it for. Also the length/handle are a bit too long for jerkbaits. I throw a lot of jerkbaits for smallmouth and if you are serious about this technique you cannot find a much better rod for them. Also the 6'9" Helium LTA Medium Action is excellent as well. Hope this helps.
