10/24/08 3:55pm Skipping? HE76HC or Frog Rod? |
|
|
|
Hi guys,
Wondering which rod has the better tip for skipping frogs/toads, etc. And assuming they were fairly similar in tip action, which one excels at sheer pulling power? I want the most powerful (and longest) rod I can get with a decent tip for skipping. I currently use my HE76XHC for heavy cover skipping duties but it can be a tad bit to stiff for some of the lighter stuff. I did a search for frog rods but most of the conversation revolves around casting them.
Thanks for any help and God bless!
Michael

There is one rod you want then...MgADFPSH78T. THE best rod for the job...light, fast tip, strong backbone....Plus we have them in stock. Ha Ha Ha

I'm looking for a frog (SPRO) skipping rod too, lots of backbone, enough action in the tip to send it 8' up under that willow tree and drag it across a mat of pads; however, I'm not so thrilled about toting a 7.5-8ft rod around in the boat. Any suggestions Trey? Hel LTA maybe? I'd prefer the solid handle (before you switch em up next year).

HE70HC, maybe? How does it differ from the MgJTH70 in action, power, & casting a 5/8 oz lure?

the MgJTH70 is the absolute best frog rod you can find. i consider myself a frog fisherman so i have tried them all at some point. the longer rods seem a little more difficult to skip. As far as a good tip..i think it has that. Soft enough for me to be able to impart whatever action i desire. as for backbone...well i've said it before on here before and i'll say it again...i jerked a 3 foot gator out of the slop that was unfortunate enough to slam my frog... got him to the boat like it was a 2lb bass....if you need more backbone than that i want to fish were you are fishin lol..i hope that helps.
Trey are there any plans for one of the new Argon rods for next year being technique specific for Frogs? I've got an idea for ya if not.
take care
JJ

JJ,
The Argon Jig and Worm Heavy 7'1" (AFJ71C) appears to be very similar to the Mag Jig and Toad.
H/F, 1/4-1 1/2oz, 15-25lb line vs.
H/F, 1/4-1 1/2oz, 14-30lb line
Maybe Trey could point out any differences in the blanks other than the 1", and why it's not referred to as the Jig and Toad as well. I'm sure there are some differences in the two series' components creating the price difference.

i second the mg all day flipping stick!!! it has the perfect tip to skip the rod i mile and you can really hook the fish well!!! i have two of them. however, im usually flipping with mine. But when im going out for a day of frog fishing i always take a He76hc. great tip and just the right length for long casts!!!

The Argon rods were designed around the Mg blanks, but do have a different combination of graphite materials. The actions are fairly similar but will vary enough to make them totally different performing rods. The guides are FUJI Alconite which is part of the price difference. On January 1 2009, the Mg prices will be dropped to a more affordable $169.95 average but will actually have redesigned blank patterns which will give them even more brute strength. Have fun, fish hard!

that is a great rod but i can ABSOLUTELY recommend you the LTA70XHC for frogs and pitching jigs.
tip is great and allows you to cast easily those baits and also the BACKBONE is ashtonishing brutal.

The Mg Jig and Toad is no longer available on the website. What is the new replacement, if any? Would the comparable Argon series rod that I mentioned above be the best choice?
