Magnesium vs. Helium Strength

Postby nudepygmy » 8/9/06 7:01pm

I read the post from bart-catlett about breaking a couple of Magnesium 7'8" all day flipping sticks and then going to a Helium. I thought the main difference between the Helium and the Magnesium was the guides and the handle? Is the Magnesium blank a little heavier but the overall rod weight is about the same because the split grip makes up for the heavier blank? Isn't the Magnesium got the Helium graphite mixed with Magnesium? Why would the Helium be stronger? Trey? Clifford? It would seem that the Magnesium should be equally as strong as the Helium. I have some of both and haven't had problems with either.

I have some of each graphite plus, magnesium and heliums and i have never broke one, and i have a tendency to boat flip any fish under 5 pounds. I just wonder if possibly the rod itself did not hit anything in order to put a small stress crack in it as that could cause the rod to break.
