Hello everyone. I have heard that Shimano Stradic spinning reels have trouble in weather colder than 32 degrees. This person claims that it freespools below 32 degrees. I own other Shimano spinning reels that haven't had this occur in that kind of weather. I was interested in buying one, but lately I have been fishing in that kind of weather(crazy as it might seem). I know the Stradic is a fine reel, and I was just wondering if anyone had any information or personal experience with this issue. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Let me put it this way, Kai. I fish a lot up north. I live in Minnesota. I haven't seen any Abu Garcia Center Drags or Shimano (you pick your poison) spinning reels free spool on me at all. I can tell you how much fight I put up with crappies from 12-14 inches range through the ice. None of my spinning reels free spool on me at all using 2 or 3 lbs test line.

Stradic is a two-thumbs up spinning reel, Kai, hands down. You can go with Symtere, Stella, Stradic MG, etc. They'll exceedly perform beyond your expectations. Secret is: use lighter than normal line fishing in a colder weather. It is very easy to freespool your spinning reel in a cold weather without proper maintenance and preparation before going on to your fishing trip. There's no such thing as a spinning reel that freespool in cold weather without proper maintenance.

I can promise you that you can ask any legendary fishermen such as Al and Ron Linder, they'll tell you the same thing. They use mainly all Shimano reels.

Wouldn't it be LOVELY if Kistler made icefishing rods! I can just keep dreaming on...

Thanks for the information my friend! I haven't checked this post for a reply for a long time, and I appreciate the information. I kind of figured that Shimano wouldn't build a product that would falter in extreme cold weather, especially a reel with a reputation for great performance like the Stradic. I just read a review online and it caught my attention because I've been saving up for one. I have never had that happen before, or even seen it, so I just wanted to ask the forum crew for advice. I have tried the Stradic before and it seems like a superb spinning reel. Thanks again Turkeyboy.

It's not a problem at all, Kai. Bunch of my buddies have Shimano Stradic 1500 on their 30" medium action icefishing rods spooled up with 6 lbs test line. They blow up walleyes out of the ice without any problems. I have NOT SEEN one Shimano Stradic of theirs freespool while assisting them getting nice walleyes ranging from 21-32 inches range out of the hole. I'll tell you, Kai, pick any Shimano reels, you'll be rock-n-rolling them big bad fish trying to give you a big JOLT of line runs. It'll not disappoint or fail you, my friend. Stay cool, ya hear!
