Best Flipping jig rod??

Postby Nodie » 3/7/10 5:49pm

What would be the best choice for flipping 1/2oz-3/4oz (very rarely 1oz) flipping jigs? Mostly fishing around pads, scum, or weed edges. The odd time in open water weed flats.

- Micro magnesium 7' Heavy casting
- Helium LTA 7' Heavy Casting
- Helium LTA 7' X-heavy Casting
- Helium LTA 7'6" Heavy casting

Never used a rod longer than 7' so not too sure if I'd be comfortable with a 7'6". Recommendations???

Thanks

I would use the LTA 7'-6" due to the fact that it will give you the extra leverage you will need to yank the big ones from the thick stuff. The others will do the job but not as well as the extra length of the 7'-6".

HE70HC since you like 7'0 rods but the 76 would perform so much better. I would recommend stepping up to a longer rod and up your game.

Anytime I am flipping or pitching I am going to use a 7'6" XH rod - more distance and more accuracy, and remember, in heavy cover you need to turn the fish & get them out - the longer rod gives you the added leverage to do so. When money is on the line, I want the fish in the boat, and my HE76XHC does the job.

........and to add, the 7'6" LTA is so light you won't even notice the extra 6 inches (over a 7' rod).

I own an LTA 7'6", I've had days where I flipped/pitched all day long without fatigue.

Go with the longer rod, you won't be disappointed, plus I think you'll find it useful for other applications, not just flipping.

My all time favorite flipping rod, whether it be jigs, beavers, tubes, or any creature or worm 3/4oz. and under is the Mg All Day Power Tool. It has enough tip for great accuracy and enough power to hook big ones. I also like how its not too stiff to pull fish to you in shallow cover and throw slack in the line. For punching and heavy jigs, I like either the 7'6 XH Helium or the 7'6" H Helium depending on what line I am throwing. Favoring the Heavy for Braid and extra heavy for fluoro.
