Rod balancing kit

Im making a valence for a 21/2" wide rod. I need to know how wide an opening to make at the ends for the material to slip on the rod. Thanks.

The post that sticks inside the rod blank is only about 1/4 inch wide and 1 1/2 inch long. Does this help?
