On July 25, 2004 Aaron Perez was attacked by a shark while wading on Bryan Beach. Aaron fought the shark off but the only thing holding his arm was a crushed bone. His recovery has been remarkable. A year later Aaron is back out in the water and is fishing strong. His arm is about 95% functional. Herman Childrenís Hospital & Dr. Melissinos in Houston did an excellent job reattaching his arm. During the shark attack we (Aaron, Don Townes, and Dad) lost our rods and tackle in the water. Kistler Rods stepped in and supported Aarons recovery. Kistler called and donated and replaced the rods we lost. A year later we are fishing off of Donís boat trying to get into some trout. Aaron is fishing with a 7í Cajun Special Spin Trout Rod when his line starts squealing. 14lb test, 2500 Shimano Sedona, 1 hr and 20 minutes, 57î later Aaron lands a blacktip shark. What a reward!!!!!!! Here are some pics. Hope you enjoy them. Thank you all at Kistler Rods.

Why not 100%?

Postby Bluetauro » 1/21/06 12:57pm

I watched the documentary regarding Aaron's attack recently and I was just wondering why you say his arm is not 100% functional but 95%. Is it ever going to be 100%?. Hope so. Still, he was very lucky.

The Surgeon managed to find everything to put Aaronís arm back. There are two tendons that run on top of the arm that were missing approximately 1 inch a piece. Therefore the Surgeon had to stretch the tendon and tie them together. By doing this Aaronís wrist does not function like it used to before the shark attack. The Surgeon has told us that with time it will grow back to normal. Where my wrist can bend to about 90 degrees, Aaron wrist goes about 45 degrees at the most. If you were to see him on a daily basis you would not be able to tell the difference, Aaron manages very well with what heís got. The reason I would say 95 percent is because I know with time his wrist will improve. Aaron still fishes, plays basketball, tennis, golf, piano, violin, and does what every kid in the neighborhood can do so donít tell him you heard me say heís only at 95 percent. He doesnít acknowledge that. I guess I can say that he is at 100 percent and when his wrist improves heíll be at 110 percent. I hope that answered your question. Thank you for writing.

Aaron Dad,

Thanks for answering

Thank you for answering, speacially so fast. I'm sure that in time he'll be the 110% you hope. In any case, I think he was extremelly lucky, getting to the hospital in time, finding the right surgeon... Funny thing this internet. A few years ago, I would have watched the documentary and I would have wondered my whole life if he ever regained complete motion of his arm, now I can get in touch with you and know for sure, very bizarre. Well, keep enjoying your fishing, good luck and stay away from sharp teeth :D

I'd like to wish Aaron a very Happy Birthday this month, and congratulate him on
becoming a teenager! :D :

I've read with interest about his recovery over the past year and a half or so, and I hope and pray that he continues to do well.

This is an inspiring story of courage and perseverence, and a good example to us all of the benefits of maintaining a possitive attitude even in a most difficult situation.

Happy Birthday, Aaron! Best wishes, now and always.

Dave Z.
