I bought a Helium 2 LTX 6'9" MH spinning rod and used it to throw soft plastics and jigs. The sensitvity was great but the strength of the rod is ...

California Series - Senko Rod

Postby Larry » 4/23/04 10:52am

One of my confidence baits is the Senko. Two years ago I purchased the Senko Rod from Kistler's and it is a wonderful rod for use with Senko's. There is just enough tip for being able to pitch light weight lures but has plenty of backbone to get the fish out of cover.

If you have not tried one yet, you should...it is an excellent rod.

Normally I use a spinning rod for skipping Senkos under docks, and when I ordered my Senko Special a couple years ago, I had totally forgotten it was a baitcast rod while ordering. Well, I still can't skip with a baitcaster, (but now there is a Dock Skipping Special) but having the baitcast Senko Special has made me throw the Senko in situations other than just skipping docks where I normally wouldn't.

It has paid off! My biggest yet on the Senko Special, a 6.64 from Lake Austin, it doesn't look as big as other fish I've caught in the 6 pound class, but this fish was SOLID, she took a few runs on me, too.

And several 3-5 pounders on the same combo (Senko Special and Shimano Chronarch SF with a Red Shad Senko)

I love my Kistler Rods! :D

Nice Senko Fish

Dave,

Nice bass in your picture. The Senko is one of my go to baits as they do work. I am going to try the new Dock Skipping rod for presenting Senko's under docks and low hanging tree limbs.

What are your favorite colors in the Senko? Mine are the 297, 194, and 051 for largemouth. The 169 works well for smallmouth.

Nice fish!

Ah Dave, you just gave away your honey hole in that pic. I recognize that red dock with the house with the red rails which is about a mile or so north of the 360 bridge.

You must have been casting along the hydrilla where you took the pic. I've caught a couple of 6 pounders in that same area on spinner baits though but the Senko is also my go-to bait. Great lake except for the water skiers.

I wish you continued success with Shimano reels, Kistler rods and GYCB Senkos. A great combination. Same as what I use. I guess Texan minds think alike.

LOL, chavez! Actually I released that fish there, but it ( - - blocked - - ) from closer to the 360 bridge! Though that grassline near the ugly red dock is a sweet spot that many know about. We had 4 fish from there last year in an Angler's Choice tourney for just over 20 pounds all on spinnerbaits! 5 bites, 4 fish, 20 pounds, can't beat that!

My favorite Senko colors are 208 (Watermelon w/lg black & sm red flake) and 900 (Red Shad lam.) I throw others, but these two seem to get the job done more than any others!

Been throwing GYBC cut tail worms on a darter head jig lately on Travis, on a Kistler Darter Head special of course. :D That's some fun stuff when you get a good fish on...
