Which Should I get Kistler Helium, Magnesium, or Argon

Postby eddie33081 » 9/18/09 12:23pm

I want to pair it with a Shimano Calcutta TE 200. It would be used for heaver cranks, swimbaits, and light saltwater. I've heard mixed results on all 3 for heaver use so let me know which you guys think would be the best pairing.

Kistler Helium LTA HE70HC, Line: 14-25lbs heavy

Kistler Argon TS AFSB611C, Line Weight: 15-25 lbs.

Kistler Magnesium TS MGSSBS73, Line Weight: 12-25 lbs. Fast Action.

Can these all be fished in saltwater? If they are fairly equal which is the best blank?

Thanks

Eddie if you are going to be chunking a lot of big crankbaits and swimbaits, I would peronally choose the Helium. It is lighter than air and the cork grip on that rod is very premium. I have that rod in 7'6" heavy and I can flip and pitch all day and when I need a little extra distance on a crankbait to get it down deeper, I can launch that plug a long way. Either of the 3 you choosen you truly can't go wrong. I have some of all three models and they are all great rods. I hope this helps.

I think I am going to get an Argon.

Has anyone tried the AFW69C http://www.kistlerrods.com/p/fishing-rod/c-/AFW69C.html
or
AFSB611C

Im between these two rods. Gonna be Big cranks, swimbaits, and some light saltwater. 15lb fluro on my Calcutta TE 200 spool.

I think that if you are throwing big cranks and swimbaits you need to go with a rod with a little more length. I would recommend the helium or Argon over 7'0 in length. I throw big cranks on the Argon AFCB79CT med. heavy. This rod will also throw swimbaits with ease. Bigger is better, most guys throw swimbaits with a 7'-5" - 8'0" flippin sticks to get a good hook set.

i think your best bet would be to go with either the He76mhc (which is one of my favorite rods) or the AFCB79CT. you will need the extra length to launch those big crankbaits and swimbaits.

I definitely agree with the comments above; you'll be better off with a longer rod to throw big crankbaits and swimbaits. I also think the longer rods would be better for your light saltwater fishing as well.

In the past, I used the He76MHC for deep diving crankbaits (it worked very well). This year I used the new Argon 7'9" "Longcaster" (AFCB79CT); it has become my absolute favorite rod for Deep Diving crankbaits! I use both the He76MHC and the He76HC for swimbaits (depending on size of swimbait).

Hope this helps some!

I would completely agree with Scott on this topic and feel a 7’6” rod is almost an absolute must when throwing deep diving crank baits and especially heavier swim baits over 6 inches long. Both the He76MHC and the He76HC will work for these but I believe the MH is a better deep cranking rod and the H is a better swim bait rod. If you are only able to get one or the other go with the He76HC and loosen up the drag a bit if your deep cranking with it.
