Please Help me chose some Heliums

Postby hank3 » 6/17/04 12:36am

I am looking at 2 for now. One is throwing spinnerbaits mainly 3/8 and 1/2 sometimes smaller and bigger and I was looking at the 6'3 mh all purpose and a jigging rod for 3/8-3/4 jigs big worms etc I was looking at the 6'9 MH or H what would youy suggest. Also I was wondering if I could buy Kistler rods at the Bass expo at the classic or is Trey going to be there. Thanks a lot.

I like to use the lightest action/weight rod I can without giving up any advantage to the Bass. I don't like overpowering either the bait or the Bass. Therefore, I'd recommend the Helium Medium Caster. IMO, it's the classic, mid-range rod that covers a multitude of bait-types, techniques, and will land BIG Bass for me--and you. It will 'fit' the baits you mentioned.

I also favor and use 7' rods as I believe that that length is the best when concerned about casting distances but when you still need to avoid obstacles. That length also gives you more leverage for working a big Bass out of cover than the shorter lengths. I sometimes use a 5.5' or 6' rod for close-in, precision casting and a 7.5' rod for pitching/flipping, swimbaits, and C-rigging.

No matter which one you end up choosing, you will be using 'the rod of your life' :D !

I agree with these two fellow anglers. You suggestions will work great for what you want to do on water. I also like softer powered rods most all the time except when pulling bass out of heavy cover. You will eventually end up with several rods that perform perfectly for each specific application.

I hope we have helped not confused you.

I would suggest the HE70XHC for flipping and pitching and a HE70MHC for the spinnerbaits. I currently have 4 of the HE70MHC for spinnerbaits, topwater, crankbaits, and carolina rigs. I like the medium heavy for the carolina rig when I am throwing a 5ft or so leader. The extra heavy is superb for jigs and other flipping baits.

Slightly disagree

Personally, I do not use a Helium when presenting a lure with a horizontal presentation. The Mark Tyler model in the California Series does a wonderful job presenting a spinnerbait, crankbait, etc. The 6'6" MH model works well for spinnerbaits.

Now I do agree using a Helium for a vertical presentation. My choice for a jigging rod would be the 7' MH or H for the size lures you are presenting. The 6'9" would be my second choice as I prefer a longer rod for leverage...
