LTA 7' medium crankbait rod/ 5:4:1 or 6:3:1 baitcaster?

Postby quankist » 3/13/09 9:33am

Hey,

I thought I'd ask the members of the board; For the best presentation possiable, is a low gear ratio a must for shallow crankbaits? Or is a reel geared that low mainly used for deep cranking? Could I get away with a 6:3:1 instead or is the 5:4:1 heavyly favoured for any type of cranking?

Thanks, Ian

I believe the 6.3:1 gear is just fine for shallow running crankbaits.

Cranking Reel

Postby NoCompetition » 3/13/09 12:56pm

Prefrence is a huge factor when it comes to reel choice in cranking and in all areas of fishing. A 6:3:1 gear ratio will serve most people fine in most areas of cranking. Where the 5:3:1 gear ratio shines, is for people who tend to fish faster when they shouldn't be, and for deep, deep diving crankbaits I am talking 16ft plus. I find for most cranking applications a 6:3:1 gear ratio is perfect for rattle trap style baits, shallow to mid depth crankbaits and even the 12-15 foot cranks. If you find your self fishing a lot in the early season using crankbaits and are not getting to bit, you may want to invest in a 5:3:1 reel, or just make a an effort to slow down. Hope that helps, Tight Lines and God Bless.
