Anyone have experience with the HE70MLC?

Postby eslerjjj » 1/10/05 12:27am

I was just about to pull the trigger on my first two Kistlers the HE70MC and the HE69APC. I sure like fishing light stuff on a casting rod (small senkos, 1/4 ounce hair jigs, tubes) for smallies. FIguring on the HE70MC for that purpose, but then I saw the HE70MLC.

Any reason why folks don't talk about this rod. Is it just too "soft" for bass fishing?

Thanks for any comments or experiences.

I use my HE69APC for 4"+ Senkos and does the job perfectly. I don't have the HE70MC or HE70MLC so I can't comment on them. Just by going by power I would say the the HE70MC would be the way to go for the baits you suggested on throwing. Figure 1/4oz weight combine that with your soft plastic weight you could be looking at a total weight size of 3/8oz. Now myself I throw lots of 1/8oz jigheads with my tubes and hairjigs, in the past I've always use a medium action casting rod for these but the problem I'm encounting is distance. I fish in very very clear waters and believe the extra distance with a 7ft spinning outfit for these lures will greatly improve my chances of catching smallies.

Also consider the structure you fish around. My fishing holes are 95% open water with big boulders and stumps. Say lots of vegetation waters medium light prolly wouldn't be the answer.

Also if you use a non stretch braidedline you could prolly sneek by with the ML action as well.

I own all three of the mentioned rods (He69APC, He70MC, and the He70MLC). I find that certain ones are better at certain things. The He69APC is great rod for 5" senkos, 3/8oz and smaller spinnerbaits, and soft plastics in general thanks to the soft tip but stong backbone. The He70MC is more moderate and a good crankbait rod, weightless senkos, and the like. The He70MLC is more of a finessese rod for small crankbaits and I use it for fish with delicate mouths like speckled trout that don't require a hard hookset and whose mouths tear easily with a rod without enough give. The He70MLC has good backbone but obviously the other two have more.

I have the He70MLC and it is a great light tackle rod. I use it for small cranks, spinnerbaits and plastics. This fall I used some hairjigs with it. A nice rod, remember to balance it out with a light reel.

Thanks folks! :D

In looking at comments, especially Chavez with experience with all three models, but also Sdesign (I just built a light crank bait rod don't need another), ditto to Earthworm77 (I use that light crank rod for smaller SBaits), and Phippy's continued positive comments on the HE69APC makes me really excited to get that rod and the HE70MC and start throwing baits.

Also Phippy makes me think that a nice light Kistler spinning rod with some backbone and a good tip could be the ticket rather than the HE70MLC, for my third rod given my fishing style and the need to cast a long ways in open water. (Even though Earthworm77 confirmed the HE70MLC does work with small hair jigs).

Desicions, desicions, decicions....

Any last comments?

I'm thinking about ordering my first HE70MLC as I just saw a new, 2003 Daiwa Pixy..................................... Great combo Cal 8) ?

I have a fear of using a MLC(and the low lb. test line required) in the swamp pond where I do 90-95% of my Bassin' but I may have to get over it  .

SD, question- You have me thinking about that Pixy every darn day. Can you give me any firsthand kinfo on the smallest Calcutta left hand in the new high speed series? I don't know if it is a CTE51. How would it compare to the Pixy for inshore salt water. I used to own a mess of 51's but they were way too slow despite being very good reels.

Cal: I ordered a 2003 Pixy today. I'm going the "Finesse" way with a HE70MLC as you used in your TT review of the 2004 Pixy. I think there's some form of hypnosis inbedded in your 'writings' or else I'm very impressionable  !

Any ideas on "Finesse"-type baits as they've been 'alien' to me before so I havn't bought or used any? I do already throw some small(1/4 oz) cr/baits on my HE70MC.

Go with the HE70MC. I own 2, and can't see going any lighter on power/action than the 70MC.
