Postby howeydog » 12/16/08 12:33am

HELLO FELLA'S, I WAS ON HERE ABOUT THIS TIME LAST YEAR ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT DIFFERENT RODS BECAUSE I WAS SWITCHING FROM SHIMANO TO KISTLER. 12 KISTLER STICKS LATER AND IM LOOKING FOR HELP AGAIN !! I FISH THE STREN SERIES IN THE NORTHERN DIVISION AND IM FISHING LAKE CHAMPLAIN AND 1000 ISLANDS. I HAVE BEEN STUBBORN FOR WAY TO LONG AND I KNOW ITS TIME TO GET INTO DROP SHOTTING. 1000 ISLANDS/LAKE ONTARIO IS PRODUCING 22LB BAGS OF SMALL MOUTHS !!! LAST YEAR A CO ANGLER WEIGHED A 6.9 LB SMALLIE. SO MY QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE "BEST" SPINNING ROD TO USE FOR DROP SHOTTING IN 20'-75' OF WATER WITH 6LB. LINE ??? THX. SO MUCH FOR ALL OF THE HELP, JOHN HOWELL ( P.S.... CANT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE LTA XHVY 7'6"FLIPPIN STICK FOR FLIPPIN MATS W/ 1.5 WEIGHT ON CHAMPLAIN)

I use the Magnesium Drop Shot rod, and I love it. I fish a lot of water 35-60' deep and this rod has performed flawlessly! You will not be dissapointed in it.

I use 2 rods for drop shotting. The Magnesium Drop Shot Special and the Helium II LTX 6'9" Medium Spinning rod. These rods are the same length but quite different. The MagTS is extra fast, the He269MS is moderate fast. I had always liked Xfast for drop shotting but noticed a lot more people in my tourneys using moderate fast rods or rods w/ a lot softer tip in general. I reluctantly tried one and loved it. Now the He2 is my favorite spinning rod. The sensitivity is unmatched by any rod out there. It is so light. The best part is the balance. The tip feels so light and you can really shake/manipulate the bait.
The Drop Shot special is an awesome rod as well. It's very sensitive, very light, and absolutely awesome for Shaky heads as well! I tend to use the Mag when I'm fishing slightly deeper water or when there is more cover structure around. The faster tip gives it a little more power to hoss the fish in and set the hook in deeper water. Don't get me wrong though, the He2 has great backbone and plenty of power. More than enough.
These are both excellent rods for drop shotting and a variety of finesse tactics. I love fishing with these sticks and you will too. If I had to choose one I'd choose the Helium. If you can afford it, go for it. Especially fishing the STREN series. You won't miss valuable bites. I hope this helps, keep up the good fishing, and maybe we'll see you on TV someday!!!

The MgDSFWML69S is a sweet stick. In the LTA rod line, once we get them in stock for 09, the ML70 will be the best for light line drop shotting and the M70 will be the best for heavier line drop shotting. Both have very nice fast tips that promote sensitivity.

I have to agree with everyone else....the Mag TS 6'9" drop shot rod is awesome. It is light weight has great feel with the light line. It would be a great choice.
