He70MHS for how big fish?

Postby Mulepadre » 12/6/08 6:49pm

I live in Belize and am considering two spinning rods to take back with me on my next trip to the states.
An MgAPMHS 6'6" for all day casting for snook from 5-25 lbs.
Trevor told me that this is a fine rod for that kind use.

Then I am considering a He70MHS for snapper in deeper water and bigger tarpon from 50-70 lbs.. I am thinking that as a Medium Heavy Power and being rated from 10-20 lbs it will have the extra backbone for tarpon that size?
A follow up question would perhaps then be whether I would have more strength and stiffness and thus be best off with a 6'6"?
Any comments?

Tarpon is a hard fighting fish, and I have personally never fished for them with anything other than a heavy action rod. I have a uncle that fly fishes for them, so they can be caught on any action rod. If you want a rod that will be good for all around fishing then I would stick with the Med-Hvy. Let us know if you have any other questions.

i actually hooked and reeled in about a 6-7 ft wide skate which is an extremely large sting ray at the coast about a year ago on a 7ft kistler lta medium heavy, the fish eventually straightened the hook after getting him to the surface under the pier but the rod held up fine. pretty durable rods.
