rod for small/med spinnerbaits

Postby ohiobass » 12/20/04 7:58am

I'm a proud owner of 4 Heliums already (2 HE70MHC's, 1 HE70MC, and 1 HE69APC), and love em! I'm looking for a 6'6" rod for throwing 3/16-1/4 oz spinnerbaits in shallow water. I do alot of small bait throwing and need a rod with some tip, but with backbone because I will be throwing in cover. Looking at the Heliums and Graphite Plus rods. I'm thinking an He66MHC, or a KSBS66, or should I go with the medium powers in those two rods? Which one of these has a better "tip" for smaller baits? Thanks, Jeff

Welcome to our 'family' young man!

I have both the HE70MCs and a HE76HC. I would not even try a spinnerbait with an HC unless that was the only rod I had and I 'had' to throw a spinnerbait.

To me, the HE70MC is THE spinnerbait rod as well as THE treble-hook bait rod. It has the 'perfect' tip and plenty of backbone as you probably already know. I would get another HE70MC if I were you but others will have their opinions and they may differ .

OhioBass, I know this is not the prescribed use but, I use the 6'6" Composite cranker for small spinnerbiats with great success. My wife loves to toss 1/8oz. beetle spins and I have found that rod works great with the smaller spinners. For 1/4oz. and up I use the HE66MHC.

I use the He63APC for tossing small spinnerbaits. It is an excellent "small" rod with a nice tip and plenty of backbone for horsing fish out of cover or from around dock pilings.

rod selection

Want to stick with a 6'6" for short distance. I use a He70MHC for distance spinnerbaiting. I do like the He70MC for cranks though Lightninrod! Nice rod! I'd try the 63APC, but I've tried shorter rods, and don't like anything under 6'6" for anything. I guess I'm in no hurry to make my choice, being that it's 8 degrees out, with 4" of that awful white stuff on the ground. Thanks for the opinions and keep'em coming!

When you say small to medium spinnerbaits, I'm assuming 1/8oz thru 1/4oz. I throw these along with a 3/16oz model a ton on the He66MLC. I like the way the rod loads when the bait is struck. I've caught some really big fish on this action rod so it can handle them.

rod

I may be throwing small stuff, but I go by where I'm throwing it, in heavy cover. The ML will not do. I throw alot of light stuff, but use a step up on my rods in power when throwing it in cover. I "may" try a He66MC. I'd like to "feel" it in my hands before gonig with it, but there is not any dealers in the area that carry Kistler. hmmm?

I highly recommend the 6'3" APC for spinnerbaits. If you're talking really light spinnerbaits, try your 7'M before deciding on a 6'6"M. The action will feel the same, and will give you a good idea of what to expect. By the way, in the email I sent you, add the 6'3" APC to the list, I forgot about that one.
