Fishing Rods

Hello all, I'm new to the site.. I'm looking for suggestions for a drop shot rod and here is what I'm looking for:

I mostly target Largemouth and also most of my drop shotting is around weeds and cover. So I want to be able to handle good sized fish out of the weeds (rather than open water).

Also, because I'm new, can you tell me if those who respond are mostly customers or are some of you pro staffers at some level? Thanks in advance.

Most replies are from average Kistler Rod customers and some are from our field staff and pro staff. You should see their title in their signature if they are tied to Kistler Rods.

If you want a spinning rod or casting rod, stick with the MH powers when you are using the heavier lines. IF you drop down to 10 lb line, you might consider a Med power. The 7' rods are by far the most popular but like CAL suggested, the 7'6" perform even better if you don't mind the extra length.

I agree with trey- you have to decide if you want a spinning or casting rod- if you are going to be flipping the weeds with a drop shot a casting rod may not be a bad idea. If the weeds are going to be sparse you could get away with a spinng rod. Heavier line and weight go with the MH lighter lines go with a Medium action.

I have a medium/light LTA for drop shotting and it works well in open water, rip-rap etc. I consider it too light for any potential cover situations.

I don't think the med-hvy or hvy would have the tip for true drop shotting. They would work but you will be missing bites that just suck in the bait and don't move.

One very successful Dallas area angler uses the 7' med LTA for drop shotting the cover you mentioned. It has the tip and parabolic action that helps in lift setting the hook.

I intend on using a spinning outfit. Another factor is that most of my fishing is in NY waters and as such, a "big" fish is in the 3-6lb range and there are very few that go beyond 6lb.

So most of last year I used 8lb test and will do that again, if not 6lb because of the ultra clear water.
