I personally use the HE66MHC for open water spook fishing and the HE66HC for when I am working Spooks around wood tullies and other heavy cover. Alot of people will say that the HE66HC is too heavy but with the drag set properly and not trying to cross the basses eyes I lose no more fish with the heavy then I do with the HE66MHC.

God Bless

Sara Spooks Rod

I use the Helium LTA 6'9" APC rod when fishing topwaters i.e. Sara Spooks, Pop-r's, etc.

I use the Helium LTA 6'9" in a heavy action when throwing buzzbaits.

hi,
the 2008 LTAs on MEDIUM POWER seems to be perfect for topwaters and jerkbaits.

I fish topwaters 80% of the time for specks and redfish.

For topwaters from the MirroMullet to the Skitterwalk, I have absolutely no issue with the graphite plus Drop Shot Special... I have been trying to get Trey to change the name to the Spook Jr Rod.

For Full Size Super Spooks and the BIG Skitterwalk, I like my 6'6" medium, but you really have to be careful with your drag... those specks have some soft mouths.

Like a few guys here, I also fish a lot of top water. When I fish top water walking baits I use three different rods, depending on conditions. For open water, when using a Vixen or similar bait, I use the Mag TS Top Water – Jerk Bait rod. At 6’8”, with an 8” handle, it is well balanced and has the perfect action for tossing this bait on 30lb braid. When tossing larger baits like a Super Spook or a big Pencil Popper, still in open water, I use the Mag TS Magnum Worm rod with 50lb braid. This rod has a heavier action, but not too heavy for tossing big baits a mile. The longer handle also helps with casting big baits far. For fishing for giant bass at the California Delta, above the thick grass, I use the Graphite Plus Frog and Slop rod with 65lb braid. Yes, the same heavy duty set up as tossing frogs. The tip is right for walkin’ the dog, but it has more than enough power drive the hook and horse in the big ones. Hope this helps you in making your rod choice(s).

I fish alot of topwaters and have found the LTA 7 ft medium as the best for fishing spooks/sammys. You can get great casting distance in open water with the 7 ft rod and the medium power is perfect. For smaller topwaters I use the LTA 6'6" medium. In my opinion these work perfectly for all topwater usage(spooks, poppers, pencils).
