Some of my best memories are from when I was a small child and my dad spent time with me doing something fun. These times are irreplaceable but not impossible to duplicate. That’s just what we have been doing over the past 6 months since his return to live closer to my family and work here at my company. There have been a few times already that we have hung out together besides the many lunches now taken together while discussing business or kids. One experience really sticks out in my mind that I wanted to share.

It was the fishing trip to Lake Amistad with my two boys and dad that proved to be a memorable experience for all four of us. The first morning when the wind wasn’t blowing us off our fishing spots, we all were hooked up. On the second day, my nine year old boy caught a heavier five fish limit than did half of the BASS Elite pros that fished on that one day. Kyle was whacking those bass all day while we were trying to imitate what he was doing with his bait, with not much luck. My dad, like always, caught the biggest bass of the week. I guess it was because of his patience in working the bait very slow unlike me and the boys who were chunking and winding trying to be like Van Dam.

You know, there is a lot to be learned about each other while stuck out on a boat all day for several days in a row. Our true character really came out in us when certain things happened that caused us to react unpleasantly or disrespectfully. Well, my dad was the only one on the boat that showed his ability to remain calm and patient while me and my boys struggled to keep our cool under the tough fishing conditions. Thank God for good examples like that to show us that it’s really all about having fun together and not just the numbers of fish we catch on our own rod.

This just goes to show us why we should respect and honor our fathers who have been there and done that better than us. Although, most fathers out there have messed up a time or two,  all of the fathers still deserve to be honored. There is not enough bandwidth for me to write down all the reasons why I should show respect and honor for my dad. If you are wondering why it sounds so easy for me to honor my father, it is because the God of universe instructs me to in His holy word from the Bible written in the book of Ephesians chapter 6, verses 2 and 3  "Honor your Father and Mother – which is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

Well, I don’t know what that means to you but it means a lot to me especially now after I have proven God’s word to be true over the past seven years with regards to my relationship with my own father here on earth. When I honor my earthly father, I also honor and glorify my heavenly father, God, as well. This is how we can make both our fathers proud at the same time and in return receive their love and respect.

I pray that you too are able to spend more time with your father, whether he is still here on earth or if you now look to him in the heavens. Either way, I can guarantee your days will be more complete while knowing you are pleasing your father by honoring him in all you do here on earth.

On a personal note, one of my goals is to go fishing with my dad more this year in order to spend more time with him before he is unable to get out and about because of his health. I would also challenge you to make room for a special time that requires you to spend time with your one and only father in heaven. The more time I spend in prayer with God, the better my relationship is with my earthly father as well.

May this year be a defining time that heals hurting hearts and brings your family back together. I pray each and every one of you who reads this will take action and make a difference in your family’s life today.
